I've had a crush on my best friend's brother for years. Which wouldn't be a problem, if he wasn't such a cocky jerk.

It's okay, though. My crush is based on shallowness, a simple attraction, so my heart isn't at risk of getting broken.

Well, that is until my best friend decides she needs to teach her brother a lesson and take his cockiness down a notch. Her plan: I'll get Carter to fall in love with me and then break his heart. At first I'm not fully on board with her plan, not only because it seems cruel, but I also highly doubt Carter will fall in love with me.

But then Carter does something that pushes me over the edge and I decide to go through with it.
Not only does the plan work, but Carter ends up being different from the cocky jerk I thought he was. At least I think so.

But not everything is as it seems.

Carter has secrets too. Secrets that could ruin my life.

Suddenly, I'm not sure who's playing who anymore.

I’ve always been a fans of Sorensen’s work and I’ve the Nova series and loved it, so when I saw that there was a book duet called Unexpected, I knew I had to read it.

Now onto the story, having a crush on your best friends brothers isn’t always a good idea, but I guess sometimes you can’t help it. Now Elodie and Ensley do agree to try and take Carter down and make him fall for Ensley, only things don’t go how they planned and other things come into play. Like Carters own little plan he has going on, which is not good for Ensley at all. Not to mention there are some things about Carters family that even Elodie doesn’t know. It kept me turning the pages to find out more about what all was going on. There is some chemistry that that surfaces there between Ensley and Carter, but I will just leave it at that.

I have to say, I really did enjoy this cast of characters. Ensley, the main character, she has a good head on her shoulders, she’s quiet and shy and completely opposite of her best friend Elodie. And even She been picked on for majority of her life she is still a sweetheart. Elodie and her brother Carter are twins, but they couldn’t be more different. But I really liked both of them. I do think there was a lot more to Carter than the “hot guy all the girls want” vibe that he had going on, but no one really gave him a chance. But at the same time he did have a hidden agenda at the beginning of the book that did make me question him. Now Elodie, she is just the spunky, blunt and a little on the conniving side especially when it came to Carter. But Elodie was always exactly what a best friend is supposed to be.

This does move a fairly fast pace but there is a terrible cliffhanger, so I would definitely recommend having the second book read to go. The not know is killing me right now, so I am off to start book two. Fans of Sorenen’s work will enjoy this and fans of young adult romance will as well. I hope you will give it a try.

I haven’t read a Sorensen book in forever, but like you, I enjoy them immensely. Eep..a Cliffy. I will add series to my list and devour them when the next one releases..lol

  2. Nick

I haven’t read a Jessica Sorensen book in FOREVER! I actually had no idea she was still writing. I used to like her angsty romances, but got tired of them ending in cliffhangers. Looks like she still likes her cliffies! I’m glad you enjoyed this one and the characters!

Hehe I always get distracted with how beautiful your blog is. I love the colors. They’re soft and so perfect together. 👍🏻

Anyway, awesome review. I read a book by this author but don’t remember the title. This series sounds great. I’m curious. Thanks for sharing. 😁❤️

  4. Kristin @ Addicted to HEA

Gosh, I’m with Kim and Nick… I haven’t read one of Sorensen’s books in a long time either! I totally got burned out on her cliffhangers, too. She’s a great writer but I really wish she could write a happy standalone. I do love her NA romances for the drama, though!! 🙂 Hope you get that HEA in the next book!

  5. Tanya @ Girl Plus Books

I’ve yet to read anything by Sorensen, even though I own two entire series by her. I like the sound of this one but I’m glad you mentioned the big cliffhanger. I’ll definitely have to have the second book lined up so I’m not left hanging.

  6. Lover Of Romance

oh thanks for the warning of the cliffhanger, I will make sure I have the second book on hand when I grab this one up. But I do love a fast paced story.

It’s been so long since I’ve read her books, they always got me sucked in back in the day as the first was always free on Amazon then I had to buy the rest of the series!

Glad she is still writing a good story, thanks for sharing!
