Can’t Wait Wednesday #12 As Bright as Heaven by Susan Meissner

Can’t-Wait Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted here, at Wishful Endings, to spotlight and discuss the books we’re excited about that we have yet to read. Generally they’re books that have yet to be released. It’s based on Waiting on Wednesday, hosted by the fabulous Jill at Breaking the Spine. If you’re continuing with WOW, feel free to link those up as well!

I came across this, and the era of time is always one that I’m interested in reading about. And this mother and her daughter go through so much together, so it sounds like it will be a fairly emotional journey for them and us the readers.

What is your pick this week?

From the acclaimed author of Secrets of a Charmed Life and A Bridge Across the Ocean comes a new novel set in Philadelphia during the Spanish flu epidemic of 1918, which tells the story of a family reborn through loss and love.

In 1918, Philadelphia was a city teeming with promise. Even as its young men went off to fight in the Great War, there were opportunities for a fresh start on its cobblestone streets. Into this bustling town, came Pauline Bright and her husband, filled with hope that they could now give their three daughters—Evelyn, Maggie, and Willa—a chance at a better life.

But just months after they arrive, the Spanish Flu reaches the shores of America. As the pandemic claims more than twelve thousand victims in their adopted city, they find their lives left with a world that looks nothing like the one they knew. But even as they lose loved ones, they take in a baby orphaned by the disease who becomes their single source of hope. Amidst the tragedy and challenges, they learn what they cannot live without—and what they are willing to do about it.

As Bright as Heaven is the compelling story of a mother and her daughters who find themselves in a harsh world not of their making, which will either crush their resolve to survive or purify it.

I haven’t had the best luck with Susan Meissner’s books, but she does have great covers. I love the setting on this one, too. Hope you enjoy it!

It does sound like it would be quite the emotional story. I haven’t read anything that centers around the flu epidemic. I bet it will be interesting. Hope you enjoy it!

I do enjoy historicals (who knew!), and I like them even more when they are set in places I have been. I love thinking about that place at a different point in time. Philly is right in my neck of the woods, and I would love to read about people being there 100 years ago.

This sounds like too much of an emotional read for me, to be honest. I do love the time period, though, and the cover makes me long to go visit Philadelphia, which is a city I’ve never been in. Who knows, I might just give this book a try! Thanks for featuring it!

Thanks as well for always visiting my CWW posts and leaving such nice comments!! <3 <3 <3 🙂 🙂 🙂
