"Jar of Hearts grabs you by the throat! The perfect blend of riveting characters, chilling details, and gasping twists in this standout thriller will keep you frantically reading until the explosive end.” – Lisa Gardner, New York Times bestselling author of Right Behind You

This is the story of three best friends: one who was murdered, one who went to prison, and one who's been searching for the truth all these years . . .

When she was sixteen years old, Angela Wong—one of the most popular girls in school—disappeared without a trace. Nobody ever suspected that her best friend, Georgina Shaw, now an executive and rising star at her Seattle pharmaceutical company, was involved in any way. Certainly not Kaiser Brody, who was close with both girls back in high school.

But fourteen years later, Angela Wong's remains are discovered in the woods near Geo's childhood home. And Kaiser—now a detective with Seattle PD—finally learns the truth: Angela was a victim of Calvin James. The same Calvin James who murdered at least three other women.

To the authorities, Calvin is a serial killer. But to Geo, he's something else entirely. Back in high school, Calvin was Geo's first love. Turbulent and often volatile, their relationship bordered on obsession from the moment they met right up until the night Angela was killed.

For fourteen years, Geo knew what happened to Angela and told no one. For fourteen years, she carried the secret of Angela's death until Geo was arrested and sent to prison.

While everyone thinks they finally know the truth, there are dark secrets buried deep. And what happened that fateful night is more complex and more chilling than anyone really knows. Now the obsessive past catches up with the deadly present when new bodies begin to turn up, killed in the exact same manner as Angela Wong.

How far will someone go to bury her secrets and hide her grief? How long can you get away with a lie? How long can you live with it?

It’s been 14 years since Angela Wong went missing without a trace. Best friends Geo and Kaiser now grown, have went their separate way and moved one. Kaiser Brody is detective, he’s never given up trying to find our what happened to Angela. While, Geo Shaw is a big executive at a large pharmaceutical company. She is engaged to a wealthy man, and living the good life.

The remains of Angela have finally been found after all these years, so Geo has recently accepted a plea deal for her part in the cover up of her best friend Angela’s murder 14 years ago. Of course, this deal was in exchange for her testifying against her then boyfriend Calvin, who is on trial for the murder as well as other murders. Geo’s perfect little life she’s created, comes crashing down.

The story follow Geo as she recounts the events for us. It is of the present during the trial, her time is prison and after her release. We are also given some flashbacks of her time with Angela, Kai and even with Calvin. Geo is one those characters that I’m not sure if we are meant to like or hate. My feelings went back and forth with her. She could make you feel sorry for her, but infuriate you all at the same time. I did think she was rather intriguing though, maybe that’s the point. Calvin, was Geo’s first love but was later to be know as the Sweetbay Strangler. Leaving three murdered women in his wake. So, I’m not sure how to describe him anymore than that.

After Geo’s release from prison is where things get very interesting. She is trying to put what is left of her life back together, but she isn’t welcome home with opened arms. This small town didn’t want to forget what she was a part of. Calvin’s escape from prison and new bodies showing up isn’t making things any easier. The mystery of what is going on slowly but surely reveals itself. It is just one buried secret after another. It was intense, and some parts wil make you cringe. There are some pretty violent moments, so fair warning. The last few chapters there is some much going on, with the twist and turns, I wasn’t sure how it was going to end. But, wow what an ending!!

Jar of Hearts was one of my most anticipated read for this years, and I was so happy to have it exceed my expectations. It has betrayals, murder, secrets, and was filled with heart poundingly intensity. Loved it!

This sounds so intense! It seems kind of like Geo had to choose between her friends and her boyfriend, but she chose wrong.

Well if Lisa Gardner thinks its a standout that’s all I need because she is one scary thriller writer. Then I see your wonderful review and know I’ll be burning some lights with this one cause it just went on my list. Thanks Jenea

I’m happy to here you enjoyed this one! I read it last weekend, and I didn’t love it nearly as much I had hoped 🙁 The story was definitely readable and twisty but I had such a hard time connecting to the characters. I just couldn’t bring myself to truly care about them.

Whew! this sounds like an exhausting read, though in a good way! I like how you described Geo — those kinds of characters are the best in books like these!

Oh wow, this sounds amazing! I almost requested this on Netgalley but stopped at the last minute because I already have so many ARCs from there that I need to get reviewed. I’ll definitely be getting this one when it comes out though, based on your review.
