They go through both bottles of champagne right there on the High Line, with nothing but the stars over them... They drink and Lavinia tells Louise about all the places they will go together, when they finish their stories, when they are both great writers-to Paris and to Rome and to Trieste...

Lavinia will never go. She is going to die soon.

Louise has nothing. Lavinia has everything. After a chance encounter, the two spiral into an intimate, intense, and possibly toxic friendship.

Social Creature takes us through the story of two 20-something women, living the high life drinking and partying it up in New York. Laviana comes from money, living in a beautiful apartment with her sister. Her bank account is full and she lives her outlandish life with her likes from social media dictating her adventures. Louise is quite and timid, works multiple jobs and barely makes ends meet. But somehow, these two unlikely friends become the best of friends, very quickly too.

There is the draw to Laviana and I could see how Louise was so enthralled with her. Laviana’s exciting and she got completely sucked into her world. Now early on we are told that Laviana dies, but the how and why aren’t revealed until much later in the book. And the first thing that came to mind for me was did someone kill her, and story centers around the drama that came with these two girls, the nights out in the city, the drinking and their sex escapades as well. So, you can see why I would be curious if there was foul play in Laviana’s death. The suspect pool would be rather large.

I have to say, there really isn’t one likable character, yet this book was pretty amazing. And the non-liakable characters don’t take away from the story at all, I think it kinda meant to be. It was so weird for me at first, I want to like them then I wanted to hate them, and this went on the whole books for me. The whole idea of inventing ones self through social media was completely enthralling and kinda scary at the same time, given some of the issues that arise with being so socially active on these sites.

I guess the fact that I didn’t like either of these girls or even their friends, say quite a bit about Burton’s writing. I just couldn’t stop reading abut these two and their adventures in New York., drama and all. And I certainly wanted to wanted to how it all ended too. The twist at the end was the icing on the cake for my enjoyment, I didn’t see it going that way at all. AWESOME!!

Glitz and glamour, lies, and betrayals filled the pages with these two girls, and it definitely made for a fantastic read. Burton did not shy away from putting it all out there about the social media being such an “importance” in the some people’s lives and the effects it has, makes you think for sure.

  1. The Candid Cover

Sometimes the characters that aren’t likeable still make the story interesting, don’t they? I love the setting and the concept is one that I haven’t read before. I will have to check this one myself. 🙂

it’s usually a bit complicated for me when I don’t like the characters. it’s great that it was still a good one despite that

Is it strange that I’m more fascinated by the story since you mentioned that there aren’t really any likable characters? I think characters like that are a little more interesting than most characters that are likable. Maybe I’m just weird? 😛

Heh, yeah not liking these characters, and still being so engrossed is such a testament to the author’s writing. I’ve got to check this out!
