Can’t Wait Wednesday #42: Before We Were Strangers by Brenda Novak

Can’t-Wait Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted here, at Wishful Endings, to spotlight and discuss the books we’re excited about that we have yet to read. Generally they’re books that have yet to be released. It’s bagsed on Waiting on Wednesday, hosted by the fabulous Jill at Breaking the Spine. If you’re continuing with WOW, feel free to link those up as well!

This sounds like it will be a great psychological thriller. From the town to the ex boyfriend all mixed together, but add in some secrets and lies, and you got me hooked. Can’t wait to get my hands on this one.

How about you, what are you waiting on?

Something happened to her mother that night. Something no one wants to talk about. But she’s determined to uncover her family’s dark secrets, even if they bury her.

Five-year-old Sloane McBride couldn’t sleep that night. Her parents were arguing again, their harsh words heating the cool autumn air. And then there was that other sound—the ominous thump before all went quiet.

In the morning, her mother was gone.

The official story was that she left. Her loving, devoted mother! That hadn’t sat any better at the time than it did when Sloane moved out at eighteen, anxious to leave her small Texas hometown in search of anywhere else. But not even a fresh start working as a model in New York could keep the nightmares at bay. Or her fears that the domineering father she grew up with wasn’t just difficult—he was deadly.

Now another traumatic loss forces Sloane to realize she owes it to her mother to find out the truth, even if it means returning to a small town full of secrets and lies, a jilted ex-boyfriend and a father and brother who’d rather see her silenced. But as Sloane starts digging into the past, the question isn’t whether she can uncover what really happened that night…it’s what will remain of her family if she does.

Yikes this does sound good- and tense. How awful to experience that at age five. I bet this is a good one!

  2. Sam@WLABB

This sounds like it will be very suspenseful, but also emotional, since she is seeking the truth about what really happened to her mother.

I like Sloane, I like her determination to find the secret, but goodness, it’s going to be dark, isn’t it?

Yes, this one sounds good to me too. I keep meaning to read books by this author, but I don’t think I’ve done so yet. I have a couple on my shelves.

Oh my goodness! This one sounds really unputdownable… It’s not a genre I read loads of – but this one is tempting me:). I hope you thoroughly enjoy it.

I’ve seen this book around a lot lately, but this is the first time I’ve read the synopsis and now I definitely want to read it! I love thrillers, especially when they involve something tragic that happened in the past. Hope you love it!

First off, sorry for the late comment back…. 🙁 I do get backlogged sometimes…..

This is the type of book that gives me shudders just reading the blurb! Lol. So I think I’ll pass on this one. I do hope you enjoy it, though! Sounds like it would make a great edge-of-your-seat movie!

    Thanks for commenting on my own CWW post!! <3 <3 <3 🙂 🙂 🙂

I think I have seen some of Brenda’s books on lists or through Goodreads, but this one doesn’t look familiar. That said, the cover is fabulous. Hope you enjoy… and thanks for making Finding Wonderland one of your Can’t Wait Wednesday stops. 🙂
