Relentlessly twisting, Samantha King's debut novel is a dark and brilliant slice of psychological suspense in which even the happiest family can awake to a nightmare . . .

Maddie Castle is broken. Ever since the tragedy that struck on her twins' tenth birthday, she's been trying to fit the pieces together, to get back to the life she led before. Maddie, her husband, Dom, and their children, Aidan and Annabel, lived in a comfortable home on a quiet street in a London suburb. Life was busy and satisfying. They were happy. Weren't they?

Now, a disoriented and grieving Maddie floats like a ghost through each day, hardly sleeping, eating, or speaking. It's easier to stay locked in her own head than to torment herself by reliving what happened. And yet, the harder Maddie tries to pin down her memories, the more they slip out of reach. Is her guilt and remorse justified? Is it Maddie's fault that everything was ripped apart?

Or could it be that the real terror is still to come?

"A beautifully written, chilling psychological thriller. Taut, tense and very clever with twists I didn't see coming." --Claire Douglas, Sunday Times bestselling author

"A completely gripping psychological suspense that had me glued to the pages and rushing through to the end. It's an edge-of-your-seat kind of read that you can't put down until it's done."--Jenny Oliver

The story takes us through Maddie Castle life, she has suffered a terrible loss and is aimlessly wandering through her days.

Maddie’s loss was painful and with her own guilt that she feels at times were just awful, so I could see why she was growing so distant. Her loss is a loss that no mother should ever have to go through. At the same though, she still has her husband and son who need her and want her to be able to live from day to day.

Quite a few characters were introduced at the beginning, and putting each of them and what their parts played was really interesting. Maddie’s memories come in little snippets, but they beg the question, are they real memories or something completely different. Can she even remotely believe her memories? Does she had PTSD? There were so many more questions that come to mind. I just has to sit back and piece them together right along with Maddie.

With the slower pace at the beginning, I was a little worried but when the pace did pick up, it really picked up at full speed, taking me on a roller coaster ride of memories and emotions from the characters, making this quite a suspenseful read. And when I reached the end all the twist and turns come to a head, some of which I didn’t see coming, making me pretty happy I pushed through the beginning of this one. Overall, this turned out to be a great psychological thriller.

Well, you certainly got my attention. Good to know that patience is needed for the beginning with the pace. Sounds emotional, too.

Oh wow, I love a good psychological thriller and this one sounds really good. I might have to add this one to my wish list. Thanks for the great review.

This book definitely missed a great oppournt8y with the PTSD part. I respect any book that takes its time to develop and write out a true PTSD experience.

Ok thanks for the slow start warn but wow what a great premise, it definitely got my attention and I’m thinking the title should be The Perfect Family–NOT

This sounds like a truly interesting domestic drama/thriller. I’m already curious about what happened, if Maddie has cause to feel guilty, and if there’s something sinister at play. Great review, Jenea!
